Street Lobby Light

Location: The Park Hotel, Hyderabad
Glistening chandeliers were a symbol of luxury and status of the royals in India. We translated the royal symbol into a modern lighting for a hotel lobby. Felt is the oldest form of fabric known to humankind, it even predates weaving and knitting. At present, in India it is only used for industrial or medical applications. We challenged the old and new boundary by using felt for the lighting in a contemporary hotel space.
The concept sketch started with a floating medallion that resembled a magnificent jewel piece, which is curving along with the ceiling. The light piece is inspired from the intricate patterning of the Nizam Jewellery and the visual splendor of the chandeliers of the Chowmahalla palace in Hyderabad. Incorporating the local heritage of jewelry making, the light installation refers to the culture and history of Hyderabad. The light piece is approx 3.7 meters wide and 4.2 meters long.
